| Bio: | Name: Rowena Ravenclaw Date of Birth: 14 January 952 C.E. Age and Date of Death: 66, 6 July 1019 C.E. Manner of Death: Died of a broken heart Life History: The woman who would be known as 'Fair Ravenclaw, from glen' in the Sorting Hat song was born in the year 956 C.E. to Ranald and Leana Ravenclaw, pureblood wizards residing on the outskirts of Tomich village near the entrance to Glen Affric in Scotland. She was their only child, the last born after several stillborn children, and even though as a female she wasn't considered as valuable in Medieval society as a male, Rowena's parents cherished her. Ranald was an intellectual wizard who observed the flight of birds and the shape of the landscape to uncover the mysteries of nature, and he collected many ancient and modern manuscripts to expand his knowledge. Unusually, he shared his love of learning with his daughter, teaching her to read and write Latin and Greek. Leana's knowledge was centred more around the home, but she had a deep interest in medicine and plants, learning how to create new potions, and also passed on this knowledge to Rowena. At an early age, Rowena showed a talent for magic, particularly Charms although she excelled in all areas of magic, and possessed a questioning mind. She loved to experiment and create new spells, much to the mingled delight and consternation of her parents. However, despite all her intelligence, Rowena was still expected to marry and as she was also known as a great beauty who attracted many suitors. To test them and also keep them at bay, she devised riddles with the promise of marrying the man who could solve three. When this challenge was met by a Calder, handsome pureblood wizard from Galloway, her parents urged her to accept and, reluctantly, fourteen year old Rowena was married. Despite her initial reluctance, her marriage was happy and soon produced two sons and a daughter. Unfortunately nineteen years after their marriage and just shortly after their daughter's birth, Calder was killed in a duel against a former friend. Rowena barely had time to mourn before being besieged with marriage offers from men who'd admired her from a distance during her marriage. She stoutly refused all suitors for two long years and finally, despite the protests of her sons (who were now in charge of their father's estate), Rowena decided to announce she was embarking on a journey. Her time in Galloway, the people she had met and the glimpse of the world outside of the glen where she was born, had raised the urge to see and learn more. She left her daughter, Helena, in the care of her eldest son and his wife, and travelled throughout Britain, Ireland, and even touched on some areas of Europe, returning home from time to time to visit her family. Rowena continued to practice her experiments with magic, inventing new Charms, Jinxes and Hexes which she taught to those she met and deemed worthy. She also created a diadem that bestowed wisdom when worn and was inscribed with the words 'wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure'. During her travels, Rowena met Helga Hufflepuff and the two became fast friends. The subject of education, particularly for women was something they discussed frequently and as fate would have it, they came across Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor who were also interested in magical learning. Finally talk turned into action when they decided to found a school to train wizards and witches. Rowena offered the use of the land her husband had left to her and therefore Hogwarts was founded in Scotland. She devised the ever changing floors and staircases in the castle, and due to the value she placed on intelligence, the House associated with her was the only one where the students had to answer a riddle instead of just using a password. For a while Rowena was happy, but there was tension between her and daughter Helena, which was caused by the years Rowena had been away during Helena's formative years. When Helena stole her diadem and ran away, Rowena became very melancholy, although she managed to conceal the loss of the diadem from the others, and after Salazar left, she became even more depressed and ill. In early 1019, Rowena knew she was dying and sent a friend, the Baron, to find her daughter since she knew he loved her and wouldn't rest until she was found. When the news came that the Baron had killed Helena in a fit of rage, it was the final blow. Rowena died in the evening of 6 July 1019, whispering her daughter's name with tears on her cheeks. HOME AND OCCUPATION Setting: The City Occupation: Curator, City Museum Brief description of the character’s home: A medium sized house on the outskirts of the City which resembles a medieval manor house inside. The rooms consist of two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, library, work room, dining room and living room. The walls are plaster work, wood panelling and have tapestries hung on them, all of which have been done by Rowena herself and depict various mythical scenes or events from her life - including the founding of Hogwarts. Large fireplaces dominate the main rooms and the furnishings are elegant and comfortable. The main bedroom contains an antique four poster bed with heavy embroidered curtains and Persian rugs lie on the floors. The work room contains embroidery frames, easels and canvas, paints, threads and all manner of craft materials. The library has an extensive range of books, all well read, on many subjects and is clearly one of the most lived in rooms. DESCRIPTION Appearance: Considered a beauty in her day, Rowena has a very fair complexion, which looks almost white thanks to her thick dark hair. Her eyes are almond shaped and a clear blue with a piercing quality that shows her high intellect and inquiring mind. She is slender and slight, standing at only 5 foot 4 inches. Her face is oval, with a pointed chin, full lips and fine features, framed by long dark brown, almost black, hair that waves to her waist. She does not smile broadly - when she smiles at all - and her common expression is a serious, almost haughty one. She dresses in clothing similar to that which she wore in life and has a deep passion for jewellery, especially diamonds and pearls, so always wears some accessory such as a jewelled band for her hair or a necklace. Her age in the afterlife is around her mid-twenties. Personality: Rowena is a serious, determined and creative woman who is not often prone to rash behaviour. Extremely intelligent, she is proud of her brilliant mind and craves intellectual challenges, actively seeks to obtain even more knowledge and has little patience for foolish behaviour. That's not to say she doesn't have a sense of humour, Rowena loves witty conversation and playful banter, she appreciates a clever joke or prank and is not above making jokes of her own - although her jokes tend to be subtle and ironic. She is very observant and enjoys watching people, finding out what makes them tick. Although she adores knowledge just for its own sake, she also likes to be admired and therefore will often use her knowledge to gain that admiration. Despite her practical nature and appearance of cool detachment, Rowena is capable of very intense emotions. She is always extremely upset when the people she loves leave her and gets extremely depressed, especially if the departure is unexpected (such as her husband's death and her daughter's betrayal). However, even if betrayed, she tends to be loyal to the person she loves and will not tell anyone of their faults (she hid Helena's theft of the diadem from the other Founders and only told Helga that Helena's resentment of Rowena's absences and intelligence caused her to run away). Unfortunately, she gets so obsessed with her work and own ambitions that she accidentally neglects her loved ones, which causes her pangs of guilt and self promises not to do it again... which she keeps until the next fascinating project comes along. Her work obsession sometimes causes her to get ill, since she will go for hours without eating or sleeping properly and she frequently needs reminders to take a break.
